Swing Dance Workshops. November Dances and Lessons.

There are Swing Dance Workshops coming up Saturday November 17th, followed by out monthly downtown swing dance with live music from the Cherry Blossom Orchestra! The dance kicks off with a beginner lesson at 7 p.m.

Swing Dance Workshops & Live Music Dance

Join us for our Fall Swing Dance Workshops on Saturday, November 17 at Odd Fellows. There will be lessons for all levels of dancers. After the workshops we will be having our signature downtown swing dance with live music from the Cherry Blossom Orchestra

We’ll be at the Odd Fellows our downtown venue. Registration is currently live. Pre-registration is $40, registration at the door is $45. Registration includes all workshops and entrace to the dance which will feature live music from the Cherry Blossom Orchestra. Resgister here. Entrance to the beginner lesson and dance is $12-15.

Beginning 6-Count Swing

This 3 week lesson series will go over basic footwork for 6-count swing, technique, and some fun moves. This is a great class for those who looking for an introductory lesson into swing dancing. It will run on Mondays, November 12 – 26, 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. Each of the remaining classes will be $10

Friday Swing Dance at OSU

Join us for our last Friday Swing Dance at OSU of the term on November 30 at OSU at 8 p.m.

Schedule

  • 7:45 p.m.: Doors open
  • 8 – 9 p.m.: Beginner Charelston Lesson taught by Becca Hicks and John Schlender
  • 9 – 11 p.m.: Swing dancing with music DJed by Becca Hicks, Amanda Lachner, Caitlynn Dougherty, and Lindsey Almarode

We’ll be at the Women’s Building our campus venue. This dance will feature all our Corvallis staples like our beginner lesson and steal circle. No partner or experience necessary. All ages welcome. Cover for this event is $5.

Swing Family Picnic, Style Your Swing Continues.

We’ve got our Swing Family Picnic coming up Thursday August 16th at Starker Arts Park!

Swing Family Picnic

Join us for an fun evening of food, live music, dancing, games, and socializing at our annual picnic at Starker Arts Park!

Schedule

  • 6:30 – 10:00 p.m.: Picnic
  • 7:00 – 9:30 p.m.: Live music from Swangle

We’ll be joined by local band Swangle so make sure you don’t miss this picnic. The picnic is a potluck. Bringing food is encouraged but not required! This event is free.

Style Your Swing

Style Your Swing is still going strong and we’ve got plenty of classes left for dancers of all levels! All weeks of Style Your Swing feature a drop in/beginner lesson as well as an intermediate lesson. Lessons are on Mondays and start at 7:30 p.m.. After the lesson there is guided practice time with DJed music to dance to. There’s something for everyone so come by and check it out! Coming Up we’ll have lessons on 6-count swing, collegiate shag, the Shim Sham, and many more.

Dance Weekend and Charleston Class

Our biggest event of the year is almost here!

Fall Swing Dance Weekend

Join us November 11th and 12th for two days of dancing, learning, and fun with instructors from Portland and Eugene. Saturday’s dance will feature live music from Boy and Bean of Portland.

There will be workshops for beginner, intermediate, and advanced dancers. A range of swing dance styles will be represented, including Lindy hop, balboa, and solo jazz.

WEEKEND SCHEDULE

Saturday, November 11

  • 10:45 a.m.: Doors open/ Warm-up at Odd Fellows Hall
  • 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Lindy footwork and rhythm variations (Intermediate) with Nika and Nick:
    Experiment with fitting unconventional footwork and new rhythms into shapes you already know.
  • 12:10 p.m. – 1:10 p.m.: Slow Lindy (Intermediate) with Kali & Austin:
    Test your dance fitness by slowing your roll, filling the void with smart movement choices, and grasping a deeper connection to your partner.
  • 1:10 p.m. – 2:10 p.m.: Lunch Break
  • 2:10 p.m. – 3:10 p.m.: Musicality (Beyond Beginner) with Kali & Austin:
    This class will help you channel your creative energies in a way that better matches and responds to the music. Learn how to build the story of your dancing through a musical phrase.
  • 3:20 p.m. – 4:20 p.m.: Solo Jazz (All levels) with Nika:
    This class will cover traditional solo jazz movements, as well as styling options and tips on experimenting if you are more comfortable with the material.

  • 8:00 – 11:00 p.m.: Downtown Swing Dance with live music from Boy and Bean

  • 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.: Beginning Balboa with Emily & Rod:
    Learn the basics about connection and footwork, as well as the “come around,” ad libs, and paddles.
  • 2:40 – 3:40 p.m.: Balboa-Swing (Beyond Beginner) with Emily & Rod:
    Learn the basics of balboa-swing, including the send out, lollies, and crossovers.
  • 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.: Afternoon Swing Dance with DJs Emily & Rod

  • Note: Sunday’s dance will be in the north hall (up the stairs, to the left), while all other events will be in the main hall (up the stairs to the right).
  • RESERVATIONS

  • An all-access pass includes all workshops and admission to both dances. The cost is $40 in advance, $45 at the door.
  • A Saturday-only pass includes the daytime workshops and the evening dance. The cost is $30.
  • A Sunday-only pass includes both balboa workshops and the afternoon dance. The cost is $20.

    This 4-week lesson series will cover basic Charleston footwork, stalls, gear turns, and hand-to-hand Charleston.

    The fall season is finally upon us and with that brings the return of our regular dance schedule.

    Friday Swing Returns

    Upcoming Classes

    This fall, we’ve revamped our lesson structure to make it easier to progress from a beginner to an intermediate dancer.

    Swing 1: Beginning 6-count Swing & Charleston

    Our beginner drop-in classes start from the basics and cover a new set of moves each time. The aim is to get you comfortably moving and having fun on the dance floor.

    This class is offered before every dance (see schedule above).

    Lindy 1: Introduction to Lindy Hop

    Starting Monday, October 2, we’re offering a 5-week Lindy hop lesson series. The class will cover basic 8-count footwork, promenade, swing-out, Lindy circle, and turns.

    Charleston 1: Beyond Basic Charleston

    Starting the week of November 6, join us for a 4-week partner Charleston series. The class will cover basic Charleston footwork, stalls, gear turns, and hand-to-hand Charleston.

    This class is great for beginners or anyone who wants to go beyond our basic Charleston lessons.

    • Save the date: On November 10 – 11, we’re bringing in guest instructors to teach Balboa, Lindy hop, and solo jazz workshops.

    Swing Family Picnic this Thursday.

    This month we’re celebrating our dance community with a potluck, live music, and dancing.

    Breakers Yard_Weekend 2014

    Join us this Thursday, August 24, for our 5th annual Swing Family Picnic. Breakers Yard of Eugene will provide swinging tunes for the evening.

    Invite your friends and neighbors to this free community-friendly event.

    Style Your Swing

    Our weekly practica continues on Thursday evenings through September 14.

    Style Your Swing is part structured lesson, part guided practice, and a whole lot of dancing. Each week, we’ll have two different 40-minute lessons, followed by DJed swing music. Teachers will be around to give personalized feedback.

    The event runs Thursdays, August 31 – September 14, from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m. at Odd Fellows Hall. Cover is a suggested donation of $5.

    We’re taking swing dancing to the streets of Corvallis this month.

    Join us this Thursday, July 13, for a free swing dance in the park. Invite your friends and neighbors to this community-friendly event.

    Downtown Swing Dance Saturday.

    Join us this Saturday, April 22 for a swing dance at our downtown venue, with guest instructors Nika Jin and Nick Davis of Track Town Swing Club.

    Spring events: dances, classes, live music, volunteer social.

    Next Thursday, April 6, we’re hosting a free volunteer social at Odd Fellows Hall. This is a space for new and old members of the Corvallis Swing community to come together. Everyone is welcome!

    It’s a potluck affair, beginning at 7 p.m. We’ll have a discussion about future plans for the community as well as a short presentation from the organizing council.

    The last hour will be reserved for dancing and socializing.
