July 26 Riverfront Dance, Swing Family Picnic August 7

Hello dancers! We may have a bit of a lull during the summer, but we haven't disappeared completely! Here's what's coming up next:

Saturday July 26th: Riverfront Swing and Blues Dance

Join us for an evening of swing and blues dancing at the Corvallis Riverfront in lieu of our regular Odd Fellows dance. Avery will teach a short, 30 minute beginner lesson. Don't miss our only swing and blues dance of the summer!

Thursday, August 7th: Swing Family Picnic

Free live music and dancing in Corvallis, as well as food and games!

It's mid-summer. The weather is nice, school is out, and free time abounds. Corvallis Swing is celebrating by hosting a free evening of food, games and music on Thursday, August 7.

Breakers Yard of Eugene will play music for us starting at 7.

Join us, and bring your friends, family, and a picnic basket along. This is going to be a blast.

    We are excited to announce that Swing & a Ms with local singer Audrey Perkins will be playing music for us this Friday. We hope you will come out and support this new local band. Added bonus: the cover is still just $5! Prior to the dance, Jeff will be teaching a beginner lesson on 6-count and musicality.

    Saturday May 17th: Lisa Mann

    Next Saturday, we have another special event. The Lisa Mann Power Trio is traveling down from the blues-steeped city of Portland. There, they have been main components of the NW music scene for many years. Lisa Mann Power Trio have graced the same as some of the finest blues events: Waterfront Blues Festival, Bronze Blues & Brews, Untapped Blues Festival, and more.

    The evening will start out with a swing lesson, followed by two hours of DJed swing music, and at 10:00pm the Lisa Mann Power Trio takes the stage for the blues portion of the night!

    Dance this Saturday, new lesson series next week

    This Saturday, we're hosting a dance downtown. For the first swing & blues dance of the spring, we are excited to invite Eugene’s Track Town Swing Club to teach and DJ. Nick and Emily will travel to Corvallis on Saturday April 12th to teach the swing drop-in lesson.

    Nick and Mateo will then keep the evening going with mostly swing music.

    After 10 o’clock, local DJ Jeff will keep the night going with mostly blues music.

    Spring lesson series

    Our intermediate lesson series, Swing 178, starts on Monday, April 14. It will focus on adding more expression, improvisation and fun into your swing dancing.

    Swing 178 is a 5-week series, held on Mondays from April 14 through May 12, at Odd Fellows Hall, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. It's a class for anyone who has been to a dance before.

    We're sharing our favorite parts of swing dancing. What makes swing dancing fun? Each class will answer that question in a different way.

    Swing workshop with Andrew Sutton, dance Saturday

    World-class instructor Andrew Sutton will be teaching a workshop on Saturday, March 15 in downtown Corvallis.

    Andrew has placed first at the U.S. Open Swing Dance Championships, and has been teaching dance around the world for over 12 years. The workshop will focus on improvisation, follow expression, arm connection, and stealing games.

    • 10:30 a.m. Advanced lesson. Matching the 9 arms. $15
    • 11:40 a.m. All-levels lesson. Stealing games. $5
    • 12:40 p.m. Lunch break
    • 2:00 p.m. Intermediate lesson. Follow expression. $10
    • 3:10 p.m. Intermediate lesson. Improvisation with a partner. $10
    • 4:30 p.m. Doors close

    The evening dance is free if you take three classes. The dance starts with a beginning lesson at 7 p.m. (taught by Andrew), with music and dancing from 8 until midnight. Andrew will be DJing the swing half of the evening, with blues to follow by OSU Blues.

    Dance Saturday; lesson series next week

    This Saturday, our dance will be a local affair, with Corvallis DJs and instructors hosting the evening.

    We're beginning at 7 p.m. with an intro lesson by Hannah and Phil, followed with music and dancing at 8 p.m., going until midnight.

    Music for swing dancing will be played during the first half of the evening, with music for blues dancing until close. Hannah, Jeff, Laurel, Martin, Phil, Renee and Sophie will be DJing.

    We'll be at Odd Fellows Hall, 223 SW 2nd St, in Corvallis, and cover for the evening is $5-7. RSVP on Facebook.

    Lesson series next week

    Our winter lesson series start next week. We have two: Swing 141 is for everyone, especially beginners. If you've been to a couple dances, Swing 142 is for you.

    Both series are on Thursdays at the Majestic Theatre in downtown Corvallis at 115 SW 2nd St. Each class is an hour, and we meet for five weeks. The schedule for each evening is:

    • 6:30 p.m. Swing 142: Intro to Lindy hop
    • 7:30 p.m. Swing 141: Beginning swing
    • 8:30 p.m. Casual dance

    The casual dance at 8:30 p.m. is free and open to the public, and will go for about an hour.

    Admission for each five-week series is $28, and includes passes to two dances. Registration is open on our website at: http://corvallisswing.com/portfolio/swing141-142-winter-2014/.

    Classes are February 20th through March 20th.

    You can also register at the front desk at our Saturday dance, or contact us to save your spot; you can pay in person on the first day of class, February 20th.

    Both series are free for Swing 171 graduates. No partner is required for any of our lessons or dances.

    Swing & Blues Weekend anniversary celebration

    Reservations are open for our 4th anniversary celebration, Corvallis Swing & Blues Weekend. We are hosting three straight evenings of music and dancing.

    Eugene's Breakers Yard, Walker T Ryan, Corvallis' Gumbo, and Kevin Selfe & the Tornadoes will be joining us for the occasion.

    We will be dancing at OSU, Odd Fellows Hall, Old World Deli, and the Majestic Theatre, in the evenings, in the afternoon, and until 3 in the morning, on Friday, January 24 through Sunday, January 26, 2014.

    We're inviting our friends throughout Oregon, the West Coast, and our nation to join us, stay in our guest rooms or crash on our couches.

    We are hosting our first swing and blues dance of the season this Saturday, October 19, at Odd Fellows Hall.

    At 7 p.m., Sam Estrem from Portland will teach the intro lesson. Your swing DJs will be Martin and Renee from 8 ’til 10 p.m., and Catherine and Gretchen will keep the dancing going with blues music until midnight.

    We are pleased to announce that Rachael Ries and David D from Portland will be teaching a four-class workshop on Saturday, November 16.

    Fall is here! We’ve got a great season full of fun events ahead of us.

    Swing 106 / 108

    This term we are offering Swing 106: Introduction to swing dance, and Swing 108: Introduction to swing and blues dancing.
    Both of these lesson series are for everyone – no experience required. We will be covering the fundamentals of swing and blues movement, and preparing students for having fun at any social dance.
    The lessons take place in room 116 in the Women’s Building at OSU, from 8-9pm before each of our Friday dances.

    Family picnic, live music on Thursday

    Our family picnic is this Thursday, August 29.

    Please join us for a full day of food, games, music, and dancing outside, at one of the nicest parks in town.

    We're hosting Gumbo, our favorite Corvallis swing band, at this free, family-friendly event. We'll be in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park, at 4905 NW Walnut Blvd, Corvallis (Map), having a good time near the large, converted barn.

    This is a community event. Invite any friends and neighbors you'd like, and bring any games you would like to play. At the park, there are paths for walking, a small playground, horseshoe pits, and a lot of grass.

    It's a potluck. We'll have a couple of grills going. If you're bringing a dish or something to cook, please email us or post to the Facebook event.

    The day starts at 1 p.m. Gumbo will start around 6, going until 9 or so. Plenty of people are joining us after work, and many are taking the day off, so stop by and say hello when you can. We'll be DJing music, and there will be food and dancing throughout.
