A favorite event

Hello. Thank you for reading our newsletter and being involved in our community. This is a good note to read if you’ve been meaning to go out dancing more often, perhaps waiting for the perfect occasion.

In one year, our group has grown from hosting a monthly dance, with outside help, to running a weekly venue with 14 DJs and 16 instructors from Corvallis. For our monthly swing and blues collaboration, people travel from 14 cities throughout the valley to attend. Thank you for your time and enthusiasm, as building a swing community is the work of many.

Some excellent events are approaching, but we are only going to write about one:

Portland Lindy Exchange 2011: March 4-6

If you attend one dance in your lifetime, please attend the Portland Lindy Exchange next weekend. A Lindy exchange is the pinnacle of swing dancing, with its focus on community, great music and fun.

Without this event, the Corvallis Swing Dance Society would not exist. The Portland exchange is an inspiration, an exhibition of what is possible in a dance community. People from across the country will be making the trip. It is the closest event of its kind, and it only happens every-other year.

We have a group of 20 heading up for the occasion. Contact us if you would like to be part of our carpool.

If you can only get away for a day, we recommend going up on Saturday, March 5. Furthermore, because we will all be in Portland, our Sunday, March 6 dance is canceled.

Saturday schedule

  • Free dance at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Live music. 1-4 p.m.
  • Main event at Bossa Nova. Two bands. 7:30 p.m. - Midnight. $20.
  • Late night at Scottish Rite. Live music. Midnight - 5 a.m. $10.
    • There will be a blues room at the Scottish Rite, too.

Upcoming events

  • Nothing important! Go to Portland, March 4-6.

Lesson today; dance Saturday

This Saturday, you are invited to our evening of swing and late-night blues at Odd Fellows Hall. Portland’s Syncopated Rhythms will be teaching an intro lesson at 7 p.m. and DJing swing music from 8 until 10. OSU Blues will be DJing blues music from 10 until close, at 11:30. The theme is Mardi Gras, and we will be dressing up for the evening. Cover is $5-7. [RSVP on Facebook]

Lesson series, starting today

Today, February 16, Marc Green will be teaching an introduction to Lindy hop lesson at the OSU ballroom club dance, starting at 7 p.m. in the OSU Women’s Building, room 116.

The second part of the series will be next Wednesday, February 23, same time and place.

Schedule changes

  • No dance this Sunday, February 20. Instead, there is a free ballroom dance in the OSU Memorial Union ballroom, with an introduction to basic swing starting at 6 p.m.

  • Possibly no dance on Sunday, March 6, due to the Portland Lindy Exchange (see below). We will vote on the matter.

Significant events, coming soon

  • The best Portland event of the year is coming up. With 7 bands, 22 hours of live music, and 4 evenings of dancing, the Portland Lindy Exchange invites dancers from around the world to have good times the weekend of March 4-6.

The Portland Lindy Exchange is the real thing. Please make every effort to attend. We will be forming a large carpool for this event.

  • Seattle's Camp Jitterbug is Memorial Day weekend in May, but often sells out in April, and prices will increase 20% by then. This event has 3 days of workshops taught by 19 world-class instructors, with 6 different skill levels, and 3 nights of dancing with live music. If you're looking for premier workshops, this is the place to start.

2011 swing dance schedule

Saturday dances: Monthly

Our monthly dance at Odd Fellows Hall has moved to Saturday evenings, a proper time for swing dancing downtown, with low lights, tables for seating and evening attire. Our format remains the same, often with guest instructors and DJs for these special occasions.

Dates for the evening dances in 2011 are: Jan 22, Feb 19, Mar 12, Apr 16, May TBA, Jun 25, Jul 23, Break, Oct 1, Nov 19 and Dec 17.

Dances start with a lesson at 7 p.m. followed by music from 8 until 10 p.m.

Sunday dances: Weekly

Our weekly dances are at OSU on Sunday evenings, in the Women's Building, room 116. These will continue to be a casual affair, with different DJs, teachers and lessons each week. Our first dance of the year will be this Sunday, January 9.

Lessons begin at 7 p.m., followed by music from 8 until 10 p.m. Lessons at the weekly dance change — there is beyond-basic instruction for regular attendees, while the monthly, Saturday dance lessons focus on beginners.

Due to university closure, there will be no dance on: Jan 16, Mar 20 or Jun 12. Our event calendar is kept up to date.

Cover charges

As the good people of Corvallis and Oregon continue to have a range of income levels, cover charges will continue to be variable in 2011. We will suggest a range at the door and ask that you pay what you think is appropriate for your situation.

On Sundays, we request you pay nothing or contribute up to $5. On Saturdays, we request something in the neighborhood of $5 to $7.
