Live music Friday. Workshop with Andrew Sutton.

Andrew Sutton Workshop

World-class instructor Andrew Sutton will be in Corvallis on Saturday, March 16. He is teaching four classes: one for everyone, two at an intermediate level (e.g., Swing 171 graduates), and one at an advanced level.

Andrew’s style is a perfect fit with the Corvallis scene, sharing our penchant for mixing Lindy hop, blues, and whatever is fun on the dance floor. He has been teaching for over 10 years, has won national swing dance competitions, and is a social dance pioneer, as an organizer of the Fusion Exchange, one of the largest dance events in the country.

For an example of his teaching style, please enjoy this lesson recap.

To RSVP for the workshop, please visit http://corvallisswing.com/portfolio/andrew-sutton-2013/. March 16 is the same day as our downtown dance, and if you take three classes ($25 in total), you’ll get into the dance for free.

Corvallis Swing & Blues Weekend: Jan 25-27

This month is the third anniversary of the Corvallis Swing Dance Society, and to celebrate, we are holding our biggest event of the year:

The Corvallis Swing and Blues Weekend, January 25-27th.

We are hosting three straight evenings of swing dancing, three straight evenings of blues dancing, and four bands: Frim Fram, the Rae Gordon Band, Gumbo, and Portland’s Worth.

We are so excited for this event, we gave it its own website, Corvallis Swing & Blues Weekend.

We are so excited, we made custom t-shirts.

We are so excited, we started working on it six months ago to ensure the event is of the highest quality.

But we are not the only ones making this event possible; over thirty of you have volunteered your time to put the weekend together. Twenty of you have already signed up to host dancers from out of town. Thank you so much for being a supportive community.

To make your reservation, please find our form here: http://swingandblues.org/rsvp/. We’ve sold about 45% of our available weekend passes, which are $40. The price increases to $50 on January 15.

We look forward to celebrating with you.

Swing class: Registration open for winter

Our premier lesson series is now open for registration! A winter 2013 session of Swing 171 is upon us.

Swing 171 is our intermediate class offering, crafted to take slightly experienced students to fully educated swing dancers in 10 weeks.

Our goal for the course is that by the end you will be ready, and very excited, for dancing at weekend events like the Portland Lindy Exchange, and the Corvallis Swing and Blues Weekend (25-27 January, 2013).

This is the heart of what we do at the Corvallis Swing Dance Society, and incredible fun. We’re inviting you to join us!

Details

Note, the class is already half full, and the next class will be October 2013.

Upcoming dances

There are two dances before the end of the year:

In January, we are hosting a weekend event with OSU Blues

Dance and workshop this weekend

We are hosting a dance and workshop this weekend, November 3 and 4.

Saturday: Swing & blues dance

On Saturday, Coyle Parker, from New Orleans, will be teaching and DJing at our dance at Odd Fellows Hall. The lesson starts at 7 p.m., followed by dancing from 8 until midnight. Cover is $5 – 7. RSVP on Facebook.

Sunday: Swing 172 workshop

On Sunday, Coyle will be joined by Rachael Ries, from Portland, for an advanced workshop.

You would be a good fit for the workshop if you’ve graduated from Swing 171, or have been dancing Lindy hop for a year or more and are confident with swingouts (video).

The workshop is at Odd Fellows Hall, starting at 1 p.m. and ending around 5. RSVP on Facebook. There will be snacks and breaks, and it’s $20.

If you would like a private lesson with one or both of them, we can make that happen. It would be about $40 for an hour. Both Michelle and Phil have done this, and learned a lot, if you want to ask either of them questions.
