Family picnic, live music on Thursday

Our family picnic is this Thursday, August 29.

Please join us for a full day of food, games, music, and dancing outside, at one of the nicest parks in town.

We're hosting Gumbo, our favorite Corvallis swing band, at this free, family-friendly event. We'll be in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park, at 4905 NW Walnut Blvd, Corvallis (Map), having a good time near the large, converted barn.

This is a community event. Invite any friends and neighbors you'd like, and bring any games you would like to play. At the park, there are paths for walking, a small playground, horseshoe pits, and a lot of grass.

It's a potluck. We'll have a couple of grills going. If you're bringing a dish or something to cook, please email us or post to the Facebook event.

The day starts at 1 p.m. Gumbo will start around 6, going until 9 or so. Plenty of people are joining us after work, and many are taking the day off, so stop by and say hello when you can. We'll be DJing music, and there will be food and dancing throughout.

  • Time: 1-9 p.m.
  • Venue: MLK Park, 4905 NW Walnut Blvd, Corvallis (Map)
  • Live music: 6 p.m.
  • Cover: Free

Live music on Saturday; Swing 171 registration open

We are hosting Kevin Selfe and The Tornadoes this Saturday, June 8, at Odd Fellows Hall, 223 SW 2nd St, in downtown Corvallis.

Doors open at 7 p.m., with a dance lesson by Portland’s Jae Wilson. Swing music follows at 8 p.m., and Mr. Selfe and his blues band take the stage at 10. Music and dancing go until midnight. Cover for the evening is $10, and you can RSVP on Facebook.

Kevin Selfe has been electrifying audiences nationwide since breaking into the blues scene in 2006. His growing stature as a captivating story teller and passionate performer are surpassed only by his deft mastery of blues guitar. Having relocated to Portland, the Virginia native is now a leading light in the Pacific Northwest’s robust blues revival.

It’s $100, and you can register here. We offer this class two times each year, and have about 7 spots remaining for both leads and follows.

Andrew’s style is a perfect fit with the Corvallis scene, sharing our penchant for mixing Lindy hop, blues, and whatever is fun on the dance floor. He has been teaching for over 10 years, has won national swing dance competitions, and is a social dance pioneer, as an organizer of the Fusion Exchange, one of the largest dance events in the country.
