We’re excited to be back with more dancing and classes in 2018. This month marks the 8th anniversary of the Corvallis Swing Dance Society. We are grateful to everyone in the community for supporting us over the years. Thank you!

Dance on Friday

Join us for our first dance of 2018 this Friday, January 12 at OSU.

Schedule

  • 7:45 p.m.: Doors open
  • 8 – 9 p.m.: Beginner swing lesson with Tiana and Tristan
  • 9 – 11 p.m.: Dancing to music DJed by Becca, Tiana, and Lindsey

We’ll be at the OSU Women’s Building, and cover for the evening is $5.

Lindy 1: Introduction to Lindy Hop

In our premier lesson series, we’ll teach you the basics of our favorite dance, Lindy hop. This 5-week class will cover 8-count footwork, promenade, swing-out, Lindy circle, and turns. Join us on Thursdays, starting January 18 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Odd Fellows Hall.

8th Anniversary Celebration

Come celebrate with us, whether it’s your first time, you’re a regular attendee, or you’ve been away for a while. You’re invited to our free anniversary swing dance on Saturday, January 27.

Corvallis Swing co-founder, Phil Manijak, is returning to teach and DJ. Joining him in the DJ booth, is friend of the scene and DJ extraordinaire, Kristin Buxton of Eugene.

We’ll be at our favorite venue in town, Odd Fellows Hall, from 7 to 11 p.m.

Dance Saturday. Winter classes and dances.

Our final dance of 2017 is happening this Saturday, December 16 at our downtown venue.

It’s a local affair this month, with teachers and DJs from the Corvallis community.

Saturday Schedule

  • 6:45 p.m.: Doors open
  • 7 – 8 p.m.: Beginner swing lesson with Zeke and Becca
  • 8 – 11 p.m.: Dancing to music DJed by Mark, Becca, and Dakota

We’ll be at the Odd Fellows Hall, and cover for the evening is $7-10, sliding scale.

Upcoming Classes

This winter we’re offering the following classes.

Swing 1: Beginning 6-count Swing & Charleston

Our beginner drop-in classes start from the basics and cover a new set of moves each time. The aim is to get you comfortably moving and having fun on the dance floor.

This class is offered before every dance (see schedule above).

Lindy 1: Introduction to Lindy Hop

Starting Thursday, January 18, we’re offering a 5-week Lindy hop lesson series. The class will cover basic 8-count footwork, promenade, swing-out, Lindy circle, and turns.

Starting Thursday, February 22, join us for a 4-week series that will continue where Lindy 1 left off, with fun variations on the swing-out.

Dance Weekend and Charleston Class

Our biggest event of the year is almost here!

Fall Swing Dance Weekend

Join us November 11th and 12th for two days of dancing, learning, and fun with instructors from Portland and Eugene. Saturday’s dance will feature live music from Boy and Bean of Portland.

There will be workshops for beginner, intermediate, and advanced dancers. A range of swing dance styles will be represented, including Lindy hop, balboa, and solo jazz.

WEEKEND SCHEDULE

Saturday, November 11

  • 10:45 a.m.: Doors open/ Warm-up at Odd Fellows Hall
  • 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Lindy footwork and rhythm variations (Intermediate) with Nika and Nick:
    Experiment with fitting unconventional footwork and new rhythms into shapes you already know.
  • 12:10 p.m. – 1:10 p.m.: Slow Lindy (Intermediate) with Kali & Austin:
    Test your dance fitness by slowing your roll, filling the void with smart movement choices, and grasping a deeper connection to your partner.
  • 1:10 p.m. – 2:10 p.m.: Lunch Break
  • 2:10 p.m. – 3:10 p.m.: Musicality (Beyond Beginner) with Kali & Austin:
    This class will help you channel your creative energies in a way that better matches and responds to the music. Learn how to build the story of your dancing through a musical phrase.
  • 3:20 p.m. – 4:20 p.m.: Solo Jazz (All levels) with Nika:
    This class will cover traditional solo jazz movements, as well as styling options and tips on experimenting if you are more comfortable with the material.
  • 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.: Drop-in beginner swing lesson
  • 8:00 – 11:00 p.m.: Downtown Swing Dance with live music from Boy and Bean
  • Sunday, November 12

  • 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.: Beginning Balboa with Emily & Rod:
    Learn the basics about connection and footwork, as well as the “come around,” ad libs, and paddles.
  • 2:40 – 3:40 p.m.: Balboa-Swing (Beyond Beginner) with Emily & Rod:
    Learn the basics of balboa-swing, including the send out, lollies, and crossovers.
  • 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.: Afternoon Swing Dance with DJs Emily & Rod
  • VENUE

    Odd Fellows Hall, 223 SW 2nd St.

  • Note: Sunday’s dance will be in the north hall (up the stairs, to the left), while all other events will be in the main hall (up the stairs to the right).
  • RESERVATIONS

  • An all-access pass includes all workshops and admission to both dances. The cost is $40 in advance, $45 at the door.
  • A Saturday-only pass includes the daytime workshops and the evening dance. The cost is $30.
  • A Sunday-only pass includes both balboa workshops and the afternoon dance. The cost is $20.

    New Charleston Class Starting This Coming Week!

    Charleston 1: Beyond Basic Charleston

    Starting the week of November 6.
    This 4-week lesson series will cover basic Charleston footwork, stalls, gear turns, and hand-to-hand Charleston.

    The fall season is finally upon us and with that brings the return of our regular dance schedule.

    Friday Swing Returns

    Join us on Friday, September 29 for our first swing dance back at OSU.

    This class is great for beginners or anyone who wants to go beyond our basic Charleston lessons.

    • Save the date: On November 10 – 11, we’re bringing in guest instructors to teach Balboa, Lindy hop, and solo jazz workshops.
    • We’ll be at the Beaver Community Fair on campus on Wednesday, September 20, from 12 – 4 p.m. Drop by to dance with us!
